Formulas that work, explained in plain English.
Do you need help with an Excel formula? Whether it's one stubborn lookup or an entire model that doesn't reconcile, we'll make the numbers reliable, fast and easy for your team to maintain.
Formula help we provide
Lookups & matching
XLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, VLOOKUP, approximate matches, multi-criteria lookups and matching across messy keys.
Logic & conditions
Nested IF, IFS, SWITCH, AND/OR, error handling with IFERROR — simplified so they can be read and changed later.
Dynamic arrays
FILTER, UNIQUE, SORT, SEQUENCE, LET and LAMBDA to replace fragile helper columns with one clear formula.
Dates, text & time
Working days, fiscal periods, rota calculations, splitting and cleaning text, and parsing exports from other systems.
Power Query & Power Pivot
Import, clean and combine data from multiple sources, then model it with DAX measures for fast, reliable reporting.
Performance & auditing
Finding circular references, volatile functions and calculation bottlenecks, and checking a model reconciles end to end.
The simplest formula that's correct
Clever formulas are easy; maintainable ones are the real skill. We favour modern functions, named ranges and structured tables so that whoever inherits the file can follow it. Where a task is really a data-transformation job we'll recommend Power Query, and where it's genuinely procedural we'll suggest a VBA macro instead — we'll always tell you which is right.
An insurance client needed to publish annual and quarterly fund comparisons from a single Excel source. The fix wasn't more formulas — it was restructuring the data so the calculations became simple and the publishing process one step.
Tell us what should happen
Describe the result you expect and attach the sheet — or a small anonymised sample.
We write and test it
Built in your file, tested against edge cases, documented in a comment beside the formula.
Optional walkthrough
A short call so you understand it and can adapt it yourself next time.
Questions about formula help
Can you explain the formula so I understand it?
Yes. Every formula we deliver comes with a plain-English note on what it does and why, and we can walk you through it on a short call if you prefer.
Is it just one formula, or can you help with the whole model?
Either. We're happy to fix a single lookup, or to review a complete financial model for errors, performance and maintainability.
Should this be a formula, Power Query or a macro?
We'll tell you honestly. Many problems are best solved with modern functions such as XLOOKUP, FILTER and LET; repeatable data transformation belongs in Power Query; only genuinely procedural tasks need VBA.
